Yesterday, in our Economic Lyceum, an Ecological Conference was held to discuss some of the issues in the ecological sphere facing Kazakhstan, the United Kingdom, and the world.

Student representatives presented on a range of topics, including urban pollution – detailing such problems as those of air quality, noise pollution and visual pollution – nuclear pollution, in which discussion centred around the Semipalatinsk nuclear site accidents, water pollution -- both in a general sense and taking the particular case of the Aral Sea, and the problems of the extinction of wild animals – using case studies from Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom.

Students approached these discussions with lively interest, speaking in English throughout. A Final Resolution was passed which proposed some measures that individuals, municipal and council bodies, industry and governments, could implement in order to ameliorate the problems discussed.

The conference was co-chaired by our native English speaker Cliff Laine, from Manchester and teachers of English Khabiba Madiyarova and Gulnara Rahimova.
